The refugee population in Uganda has been growing rapidly since 2013.
Nakivale refugee settlement was established in 1958 and officially recognized as a refugee settlement in 1960, Nakivale refugee settlement is the 8th largest refugee camp in the world with over 180 000 refugees living there. It is one of the oldest refugee settlements in the Uganda, near the Tanzania border in Southwest Uganda.
Kyangwali refugee settlement is home to over 12o ooo people. Over 80% are women and children. Kyangwali is in west Uganda near the border of Rwanda,
Adjumani, located forty kilometers from the border with South Sudan, is home to more than 210,000 people and is the second largest refugee settlement in Uganda.

Uganda is one of the biggest refugee hosting countires in the world.
The refugee population in Uganda has been growing rapidly since 2013. Currently about 200 asylum seekers arrives daily in the country, Kongolese refugees come across the border over Lake Albert. The boat trip takes several hours and most the refugees cannot swim.
After arriving to Uganda, refugees are placed to transit centers. Transit and reception centers are overcrowded, and many of the refugees has to sleep in temporary tent shelters.
There's a serioius lack of food, water and medicines.


















4/2022 Ongoing documentary
The photo series tells about the Tervalampi estate located in Vihti, which in a short time became emergency shelter for Ukrainian refugees in the spring of 2022.
The owners of the estate, Alexandra and Niko Ahlqvist, are agricultural entrepreneurs who bought the estate from the city of Helsinki in 2020. In May, about sixty Ukrainians lived in there. Half of them were children.
