Mikael and Oscar began their aid trips to Ukraine among the first volunteers departing from Finland in the early spring of 2022, following the start of Russia's invasion. After Russia's invasion, a law was enacted in Ukraine that decriminalized firearms for the duration of the war, allowing all civilians to carry weapons to defend their country.

Blue Raccoon collaborates with an organization that Finnish volunteers supplied with metal detectors, computers, and a generator. The staff at Blue Raccoon are aware that the Russians have marked the café's location on their maps, as Blue Raccoon also works with the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
